Thisbe, 1909
Sotheby's

Thisbe was in love with Pyramus, her next door neighbor. Their parents were against their relationship, so they could only speak through a crack in the wall that joined their houses. They agreed to meet in the glen and run away together. Thisbe got there first and was frightened away by a lion. She dropped her scarf as she ran to hide. When Pyramus arrived, he saw the lion chewing on Thisbe's scarf and assumed the lion had eaten her. In despair, he drew his sword and committed suicide. When Thisbe came back, she found her lover dead and killed herself with the same sword.
