The Lady of Shalott, 1894
City Art Gallery,
Leeds, England

The Lady of Shalott comes from a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson by the same name. Here, Waterhouse is depicting the scene where the Lady of Shalott is bringing a curse upon herself by turning from her mirror and loom to see the real world for herself. On her looms are depictions of the reflections she has seen in the mirror, but only the sight of Lancelot has been strong enough to make her look out the window.
