Penelope and the Suitors, 1912

Aberdeen, Scotland

Penelope was the wife of Ulysses (also known as Odysseus). She stayed home to raise their son while Ulysses was fighting the Trojan for twenty years. While Ulysses was gone, Penelope was pestered by many suitors, yet she remained faithful. When she thought she had no choice but to pick one, she told them she would weave a burial shroud from Ulysses, and when it was finished, she would choose and marry a suitor. Everyday she worked on the shroud, and every night she undid her work to stall for more time. When Ulysses did return, he was pleased to see that Penelope had been faithful, and he killed the suitors.
