Ophelia, 1894
Christie's Images
In Act IV Scene I of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia appears quite out of her mind. Her father has been mistakenly murdered by her lover Hamlet who now treats her coldly. Her hair has fallen down, she speaks incoherently, and sings bit and pieces of strange songs. She gathers flowers that symbolize remembrance, thought or melancholy, flattery, ingratitude, repentance, sorrow, and faithlessness. When she falls in the creek, she decides to let herself drown.
