Echo and Narcissus, 1903
Walker Art Gallery,
Liverpool, England

Echo was a wood nymph who helped cover up one of Zeus's affairs by stalling Hera with endless chatter. As a punishment, Hera put a spell on Echo, allowing her only to repeat the last word of others. One day she saw the beautiful Narcissus, but it was too late because he had seen his reflection in a pool of water. He was so taken with his reflection that he would not leave it for food. For days he stayed by the pool, unaware of Echo, who was desperately in love with him. Every time he tried to embrace the image he saw it disappeared, and he died of starvation and despair.
