Miranda - The Tempest, 1916
Sotheby's
This scene is taken from William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Prospero was a magician and was banished to a small island with his daughter Miranda. When she comes of age, he stages a shipwreck to bring a prince to the island. Miranda sees the wreck, and her heart aches for the people on board. Prospero gives the prince a gentle landing. Miranda and the prince fall in love, but Prospero keeps them apart, knowing that will make their love even stronger. At last he relents for a happy ending.
